Salt and Light

Matthew 5:13-16 (ESV) “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Called to Be Salt

Salt is an essential element in our daily lives. It preserves, enhances flavor, and even has healing properties. When Jesus calls us “the salt of the earth,” He is reminding us of our role in preserving what is good, bringing out the richness of God’s truth, and bringing spiritual healing to a broken world.

However, Jesus also warns that if salt loses its saltiness, it is no longer useful. This is a challenge for believers—are we living in a way that brings Christ’s presence into our homes, workplaces, and communities? Are we preserving the goodness of God’s Word, or have we become so diluted by the world that we’ve lost our distinctiveness? As followers of Christ, we are meant to influence the world rather than be influenced by it.

Called to Be Light

Jesus also calls us “the light of the world.” Light has a singular purpose—to shine. It dispels darkness, provides guidance, and brings warmth. A city on a hill is visible from miles away, just as our faith should be evident in how we live, speak, and act. We are not meant to keep our faith hidden but to let it shine brightly so that others can see and be drawn to God’s love.

Too often, fear, insecurity, or complacency can cause us to hide our light. We worry about what others will think, or we grow weary in our faith journey. But Jesus encourages us to put our light on a stand—to live boldly and faithfully, so others can see Christ through us.

Living as Salt and Light

Being salt and light is not about being perfect; it’s about being faithful. It’s about influencing the world with the truth and love of Christ in both small and significant ways. It may be in the way we show kindness to a stranger, stand up for what is right, or offer encouragement to a struggling friend. Every act of faithfulness reflects the goodness of God.

As we let our light shine and remain “salty” in our faith, our purpose is not to bring glory to ourselves but to direct others toward God. Our actions should inspire others to see His grace and love in our lives.

A Final Encouragement

Today, ask yourself:

  • Am I living as salt, preserving what is good and adding Christ’s flavor to the world around me?

  • Am I shining as a light, boldly reflecting God’s truth and love?

Let’s be intentional about living as salt and light. Let’s live in such a way that when others see us, they see Christ and give glory to the Father in heaven.
