Killing Sin: A Call to Action from Colossians 3:5-10
In Colossians 3:5-10, the Apostle Paul offers a stern yet transformative directive to believers: "Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature." This bold command is not merely about restraining or managing sinful desires but eradicating them from our lives entirely. The call to "kill sin" is as relevant today as it was to the early church in Colossae, where Paul issued this spiritual challenge.
Paul begins by listing the sins that entangle us—sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed—sins that are rooted in idolatry. These behaviors are not just personal flaws; they invite the wrath of God. Sin, Paul warns, is a destructive force that seeks to kill us. It is a predator that must be slain before it ruins our lives, spiritually and physically.
The passage continues by highlighting how believers are called to live differently than before. Paul reminds us that while we once walked in these sinful ways, those who are in Christ must now take on a new self, “which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.” The transformation Paul speaks of is not an option but a necessity for anyone claiming to follow Jesus.
This scripture is a profound reminder that sin must not be coddled or entertained. It's not something to be pushed aside with half-measures. Instead, it requires decisive and intentional action to "put it to death." This applies to not only obvious sins like sexual immorality but also subtler ones like anger, malice, and filthy language. Each sin threatens to separate us from God's purpose, and by allowing it to linger, we risk losing our inheritance in God's kingdom.
Paul’s directive to “put off the old self” and put on the “new self” is a call to sanctification—a lifelong process where we are gradually molded into the likeness of Christ. However, this renewal doesn't happen by accident. It requires daily submission to the Holy Spirit, discipline, and the willingness to confront and kill sin in every area of our lives.
To live out Colossians 3:5-10 is to live in constant awareness of the sin that lurks within us and to engage in the daily battle to kill it. As believers, we are called to live set apart, bearing the marks of a transformed life. Paul reminds us that if we do not deal with sin aggressively, it will destroy us.
So today, ask yourself: What sins in your life are you merely tolerating? What earthly desires are holding you back from fully living in the new identity Christ has given you? The challenge is clear—take it outside, and put it to death. Sin must die so that we may truly live.
